My practice is influenced by sexuality and trauma – both personal and generational trauma relating to my experiences as a Latin American woman. My work is primal and visceral, cultivating an intimate world where the viewer is confronted by childhood innocence and the dark recesses of the adult soul. It drops people into experiences that force them to form their own connotations. Perhaps my forms might draw people to crave touching them while simultaneously being ashamed to have that desire. I aim to toe the line between disturbing and endearing – melancholy and sarcasm.
My work does not rely on the kinds of words that tend to create separation between educated and uneducated, wealthy, and not wealthy or even white and Latino. Caught in the middle are many of the confounding feelings we all have about many things in life. State and religion, spirituality and sensuality, love, and vulnerability. My work is seldom nice, and it is also seldom entirely without sensuality. There is something to be said about intense experiences. My work is a multi-valent visual poem that places the audience squarely in control of deciding what the connotations are. A grotesquely arousing experience.
