Bio
Abdul Rahim Hamid was born in Lahore, Pakistan, and is currently completing their B.A in Studio Arts and Computer Science from Carleton College. Their work primarily deals with the human body, abstractions of space, and the relation between the two, pulling from their experiences growing up in their home country during times of political instability and questions surrounding both religion and language in a post-colonial context. They primarily work in pen and ink but also enjoy the challenge of plasterwork and other 2D mediums such as painting and pastel.
Artist Statement
My work talks most about vulnerability and alienation, feelings that are quite familiar to me as an immigrant and stranger to my own home country and language. Growing up in a tenuous democracy plagued with a history of dictatorship and economic exploitation, I do my best to translate the confusion, frustrations, and perseverance that defines much of my experience of being Pakistani, Muslim and existing in a Pakistan after Partition that is still under the influence of global financial systems that in some ways emulate the effects of the direct colonization of Pakistan’s past. Each work forms a disparate part of this wider narrative, visualizing difficult emotions around history, violence, religion, and people.
