The Light Is On The Land is a collaborative exhibition by Jennifer Nevitt and Galilee Peaches. This work is informed by a series of walks taken in 2020-21 in the regional grasslands and plains of Minnesota. While walking, Nevitt returned to the observations at the heart of her practice: noticing how color makes space and light creates form. This exhibition considers how being in a landscape changes us and questions the figure’s relationship to the ground. Nevitt extends the visual concept of the ‘figure/ground’ relationship (the identification and accurate depiction of the subject’s location within its background) to embody the emotional dynamic between an individual and their landscape, throughout history and into the future. In this exhibition, Nevitt and Peaches create a landscape with wooden structures, layered drawings, and dyed and painted paper. The Light Is On The Land is a space to witness how light and the figure illuminate and cast shadows on the land.
Jennifer Nevitt’s creative practice combines drawing, sculpture, and painting. Her work emerges
from the care we need as humans living together on a planet. She lives in South Minneapolis.
Her studio is in her home. Jennifer has made work and exhibited in the Twin Cities for over 20 years.
Galilee Peaches, NYC is an interdisciplinary artist who studies the dynamics of intimacy between individuals and within environments. She uses surface, material, and composition to evoke memory and to create spaces that hold mystery and vitality. Her work explores acts of retrieval, disruption and amendment, finding that we leave distinct traces of ourselves and of our actions on the objects around us. Peaches' aim is to record this imprint in order to better understand our individual histories and collective existence.
