Hannah Walter

Bio

Hannah Walter is an emerging Edmonton artist and recent Bachelor of Fine Arts in Art and Design graduate from the University of Alberta. Her painting and sculpture practice reflects introspective moments of her life and imagination. Hannah's best and most constant source of inspiration is nature and its serendipity, having grown up with many outdoor experiences that shaped her upbringing like canoeing, camping, and hiking. Appropriately, even more of her life is spent looking for and appreciating beauty in ordinary moments of life than creating them herself in the studio.

Artist statement

Through my mixed media sculpture and painting practice, I approach coping with struggle and doubt, anxiety and loneliness. This often results in art that relates just as much to healing and joy. My understanding is that maybe those feelings which we find difficult are just as precious and worthy of our attention as the more pleasant ones: that they make the pleasant ones more potent.

This philosophy directs my body of work, which takes on contemplative figures lost in complex scenes with moments of abstraction and surrealism. I am intensely interested in how surface attention can emphasise the nature of volume, mass and presence within a sculptural work, and the relationship between layers of space that collide and overlap against the same flat plane within paintings. By blurring the lines between what is inside and what is outside, what is real and what is felt, and what is rendered and what is suggested, I try to capture moments in time when I am lost within contradicting emotions, as well as recognising the act and sensation of being alive in all its strangeness and complexity.
