Elise Gersky

Bio

Elise Gersky is an emerging multimedia artist, and freelance digital illustrator from Minneapolis and raised in Columbia, Missouri.

As a child, she was unschooled, and spent her afternoons painting with watercolors in the woods, and visiting local galleries by bicycle. As teenager, got her first job at a co-op gallery, and shortly went on to attend Minneapolis College of Art and Design in 2021. Today, she maintains a studio practice utilizing representational oil painting, digital art, collage, and sculpture. She takes inspiration from recent history, her unique childhood, plants and animals, life-altering delusions, technology and architecture. Her work has been displayed at MCAD, the Rogue Buddha Gallery, and ACME Collective.

 Artist Statement

I make images and installations that depict and celebrate inner conflict, and the fragility of the human mind. My recent paintings and sculptures are made up of detailed studies, and guttural, nonsensical private writings that I then deface with scribbles, or more text. Then I repeat the process. This way of making is directly inspired by some posters and writings that I made during a drug-induced psychotic state, and through that process I utilize the shame and discomfort that I feel while looking at them.

My work is and always has been, autobiographical. Through objects that I have owned, used, and then retired, I immortalize my own history within the object. I am ultimately, interested in physically preserving aspects of myself.

I also want to remind people that we are the same species that committed the atrocities of yesterday, and that we regularly deceive ourselves about the atrocities of today, such as slave labor in electronics and clothing, simply because it is useful to us and hard to go without.Through my art, I want to remind people that we are all small piece of the best and worst of human history.
