NE SCULPTURE | Gallery Factory houses a vibrant internship residency program for emerging artists. This residency is a good fit for artists early in their career who are looking to exhibit work in a group show, have interest working in community, and are driven to push their studio practice. This residency is best fit for artists who are self-motivated, flexible, and enjoy working in a shared studio space. A background in studio arts is strongly encouraged. It is possible to receive college credit for their internship. Applications for the 2024 Artist Intern Fellowships are accepted until Friday, March 1st, 2024.
There are up to 3 artist interns accepted for each session:
Spring April 15th–June 15th
Summer June 16th–August 15th
Fall August 16th–November 20th
Position Description
Work
During the residency, Intern Artist Fellows work for NE Sculpture, approximately 12 hours per week. Weekly hours fluctuate depending on the gallery’s exhibition schedule. Primary job responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Studio
While in residence, interns have access to a shared studio which includes the tools listed below. Artists are responsible for bringing other necessary tools for their specific needs.

Intern Artist Fellows will exhibit work made during the residency in the gallery work for a 3-4 day public pop up show. Examples of past shows can be viewed here. Past interns have had the sculptures created during their residency sited at locations such as Silverwood Sculpture Park, the NE SCULPTURE Quad, Eastside Neighborhood Services, and various other sites around Northeast Minneapolis Arts District.
Accommodations
Room & board is provided as compensation. All other costs including materials and travel expenses are the responsibility of the artist.
The Apartment
Artist interns live in a fully furnished apartment on the second floor of a house in Northeast Minneapolis, located two blocks from the Mississippi River and Boom Island Park, and just across the river from downtown Minneapolis. Location offers proximity to work at NE SCULPTURE as well as being close to grocery stores, libraries, coffee shops, etc. Artist interns are provided with bicycles to transport them to and from work – NE SCULPTURE is about a 5 minute car ride, 8 minute bike ride, or 25 minute walk from the provided apartment. Benefits also include being enmeshed in the vibrant Northeast Minneapolis Arts District and daily meetings with many professional working artists. Past interns have formed meaningful connections with artists and other art professionals in Northeast Minneapolis, resulting in mentorship, learning new studio disciplines, and broadening their artistic community.
Food Stipend
Intern artists are reimbursed up to $75 per week for groceries.
Academic Credit
This is a non-paying position. We can work with you and your institution to offer internship/course credit. We can assist and encourage you to apply for internship funding for your travel or artistic materials through your home institution. You are encouraged to make use of the studio facilities to create new work to be installed and exhibited in Northeast Minneapolis. Assistance will be provided for installation and creation of new work as well as material acquisition and in kind support of materials when possible. Training on equipment will also be provided where appropriate. It is the applicant’s responsibility to contact their respective university to see if this internship would be accepted for college credit.
